VMware Infrastructure 3 by Chris McCain

VMware infrastructure 3 by Chris McCain and Sybex.

I’ve started installing a 7 host farm about a week ago so I picked this up to get familiar with everything I was getting involved in. After searching forums and catching a few CBT’s on VM this was an excellent source to follow through with. The author is pretty laid back and covers everything in a flow that doesn’t make your eyes glaze over.

It can be used as a reference but I definitely liked it as a intro book. Anyone needing an introduction to VM should grab this book. I got lucky and grabbed this one first. I like reading intro books and then getting into more detailed books after knowing the lingo.  I’ve got a pdf version of VMware ESX Server so I’ll probably get started on this next.

I’ve also been working on a Linux setup at home. I’ve been using Ubuntu on a laptop at work but decided to go with Fedora at home. I picked up a Fedora 9 & Red Hat Enterprise book over the weekend. I doubt I’ll read this one straight through because it’s an ongoing “side” project but definitely post the process.

Got to find a good non-technical book? Any suggestions?

Sun x4150, VM and Other Operating Systems Too

SAN FRANCISCO - JANUARY 29: A Comp USA custom...

I’ll get into this a little more later but thought I’d throw this out there for those that may need a hint of direction.

When you get a x4150 double check one that you’ve got the controller and LSI driver installed. Windows will need to the driver and VM will definitely need the controller. I had two Sun boxes today. One with no  controller and then the other the driver wasn’t installed.

Another tip is check out nLite or the CD imager exe on the Tools and Driver CD from Sun. Basically what you do is rip the Windows OS to your system, then rip the needed drivers to that directory, create an ISO and wallah all the drivers are already on the install cd.  Easy stuff and I’ll cover more details later.

New Year Resolution Number 119…

talk nerdy to me

Work -

#1: Read More. Normally I read about 2-3 books, a month. Why then do I say read more? Well honestly out of the 30 or so books I read a year they are always related to something computer related, a technical cert I am working towards, something from work or just whatever nerdy project I am doing on the side. This year I will read at least one none I.T. related booked a month.

#2 Certifications. By the end of the year I’ll finish my CCNP, start working on Win08 and a RHEL certification as well as taken a test for VM and Citrix. Basically I want to take about 2 test every 3 months and will most likely start with VM and finishing my Citrix tests. Along the way I’ll hit a test or two for CCNP and Microsoft.

#3 Flip Sites. Out side of work, I want to flip a few sites and build upon the sites I’ve already got going. The last part of this year I basically used this site and a couple of others to get a better idea on building sites and optimization. I’d love to say I dabbled in different aspects of online monetizing but could never focus solely on anything specific. What’s the point of monetizing if no one’s hitting the sites in the first place? This year I’m going to focus on on subject at a time that can be utilized over all the sites. Throw out the one’s that aren’t working and build upon what is. I’ve spent enough time learning the back end now I’m going to step out and push a little bit. Also I have a couple of sites that I am going to build upon not for advertisement but to flip for a profit.

Health -

#4 Drink more H2O. I drink a lot of soda’s and not nearly enough water. I want to drink at least 3 or 4 bottles of water a day. That may or may not be enough I don’t know but it will definitely be a drastic improvement for me now. (I hate the taste of water)

#5 Quit Smoking. Over several months I’ve slowed down a great deal. I don’t smoke throughout the day. I don’t smoke around the girls. I smoke to much when I drink but that’s next on my list. Anyways if I can put off that much throughout the day then why not all the time? arrrrgh.

#6 Better sleep habits. I sleep pretty good now but I still have a bad habit of not wanting to get out of bed. Actually I don’t like going to bed either so maybe that’s what the problem is? The past month of so I’ve been crashing around 10ish but drag in the AM. I would like to get into the habit of going to bed when I’m tired, and at a descent hour and then waking up at the same time every morning. The same time EVERY morning. I’ll start with 6:30 but work towards 5:30.

Overall -

#7 Chill out more. I need to relax. I’ve been so focused on work and trying to get things done that I’ve become a ball of stress and that’s shit. All my life I use to think about how bad it would suck to do nothing but wake up, work, come home, crash, wake up, work, come home, crash, blah, blah, come home, blah, blah. I’ve got to find a hobby.

#8 Spend more time with my family. I’ve got three beautiful girls and a crazy wife that I absolutely love to much. There’s no reason in the world we shouldn’t be spending every chance we can together. Between getting beat on the Wii by the 6 year old, playing hide and go seek with the 3 year olds or just spending the day outside do whatever they deserve more me time.

#9 Focusing on what’s important. Whether it’s the test I’m prepping for. The link building for a particular project site. Downing that third bottle of water. Calling my wife to say hi. I’ve got to focus more, stay organized and stay on top of things. If I don’t take care of me, who else will.

THINK of a number from 1 to 10

MULTIPLY that number by 9

If the number is a 2-digit number, ADD the digits together

Now SUBTRACT 5

DETERMINE which letter in the alphabet corresponds to the number you ended up with (example: 1=a, 2=b, 3=c,etc.)

THINK of a country that starts with that letter

REMEMBER the last letter of the name of that country

THINK of the name of an animal that starts with that letter

REMEMBER the last letter in the name of that animal

THINK of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter

How would did you come up with a Kangaroo in Denmark eating an Orange?

Have you made it over to http://storyofstuff.com/ yet?

Well if you haven’t, check it out.

However before you get to involved in your personal movement you should also check out Quadzillas comments over at his site.

For both the video and the response to the video, it shouldn’t have to be this way but everyone should be reminded just because someone uses intelligent terminology, a professional appearance or plays off others emotions, that they are automatically the know all end all. Just because it’s on TV or the interweb does not make it true.

Do your own research first when forming your opinion.
